While Nobody Is Watching

Michelle Dunne. Polis, $16.95 trade paper (320p) ISBN 978-1-951709-39-6

Set in Cork, Ireland, this earnest series launch from Dunne (the Turbulent series) introduces Lindsey Ryan, a former soldier suffering from PTSD who has recently started work for an organization called Tús Núa (“new beginnings” in Irish). Lindsey hopes to overcome her own issues by helping others deal with the nightmares, hallucinations, and other symptoms of PTSD. Meanwhile, a stalker is leaving threatening notes at her home and office, and she becomes unable to separate reality from the manifestations of her disorder. Fortunately, she has one true friend: her service dog, Frank. As the threats escalate into actual physical attacks and her home vandalized, Lindsey must learn to trust her colleagues and her old military buddies, who are willing to put themselves on the line for her sake. Vivid descriptions of PTSD symptoms and superficial stories of troubled youth overshadow the crime solving. Those more interested in serious social issues than a tense plot will be most satisfied.
