Propagated from the Ashes: The Story of How My Indoor Garden Saved My Life

Kristin Topping. Golden Brick Road, $19.95 trade paper (200p) ISBN 978-1-988736-60-0

Topping recounts her lengthy and troubled recovery from a concussion in this static debut. Topping describes her years studying engineering at the Royal Military Academy of Canada, a rugby obsession that taught her to tough out the aftermath of injury, and her appointment to multiple engineering posts. After an accident on a roller-coaster, Topping did nothing to address her head injuries, the effects of which eventually forced her to leave her job due to ongoing pain and cognitive issues. While recovering at home, she focused on tending to her small collection of plants as a self-care and mindfulness practice. Feeling lifted out of her depression and self-pity, she researched the benefits of plants (they increase oxygen levels and remove airborne toxins, and allow their owners to connect with nature) and later started a business selling uncommon house plants. Unfortunately, Topping’s bland prose communicates emotions and passion weakly: “Since taking up this urban jungle hobby and mindful horticulture, I have come closer to feeling whole again.” While the insight is underwhelming, the author’s experience of recovery ably demonstrate the benefits of living with plants and listening to one’s body.
