Where’s the Architect? From Pyramids to Skyscrapers: An Architecture Look and Find Book

Susanne Rebscher, illus. by Annabelle von Sperber. Prestel, $19.95 (32p) ISBN 978-3-7913-7301-0

Two child explorers, Ben and Mia, travel through the past to view 12 masterful works of architecture. Within von Sperber’s bustling, largely historical scenes, the architects of the buildings themselves are hiding inconspicuously. Rebscher describes each building’s purpose, design, and construction, along with other intriguing details. The Eiffel Tower, she explains, “was supposed to be dismantled after the fair, but people admired it so much that it remained where it was.” Several of the scenes are set in the present day: in Nara, Japan, tourists walk the grounds of the Toˉdai-ji Temple. Though the framing device is underdeveloped, the detailed spreads offer abundant opportunity to explore. Ages 4–8. [em](Oct.) [/em]
