Gr 2-4-A seven-year-old boy tells the story of finding a tiny fairy in his family's garden. Predictably, Melu twinkles, but she also displays an unladylike temper and a surprising agenda. She has come to find a husband, and she intends to take the boy off with her to fairyland as her new spouse. Fearful of his fate (but also a little curious, not to mention honored), the boy tries to get his parents to help. At first, they dismiss his story out of hand. Later, they are intrigued by the fairy's offer and consider letting their son go. Grandma Emma, on the other hand, not only believes the boy, but she also seems to know a great deal about fairies and their tricks. She persuades Melu to take the family cat as her husband instead. The simple caricatures done in vivid colors are great fun. Young readers will enjoy this very unusual story.
