A celebrated Spanish poet and essayist, Jim nez Lozano received the Premio Nacional de las Letras Espanolas in 1992 for his collection of novels, essays, and poetry. This is the story of Leo Chanez, a 70-year-old political leader from the Franco period who teaches a group of younger politicians. After retiring, Chanez is convinced that his devoted students will realize how essential he was to the government, but when they go on without him, seemingly forgetting about their former mentor, Chanez is compelled to get his foot back into the political mainstream and teach the younger politicians a lesson. Filled with all the back-stabbing that comes with crooked friendships, Jim nez Lozano's story teaches readers an important lessonthey must be careful with their trust. Although the novel revolves around politics, those expecting to recognize any Spanish political leaders will be disappointed. The core subject matter has more to do with corrupt friendships than corrupt politicians. Several comical characters, like Chanez's indiscreet driver and the woman who wants to play the part of a politician's wife, will entertain readers, but the language is not intended for Spanish students at the beginner's level. Recommended for the fiction section of all public libraries and bookstores.Teba Cespon, Queens, NY
