El Pollito Pelado
Gr 1-3-Nunez retells a popular Portuguese folktale in which a featherless chick finds a bag of gold. As he makes a journey to see the king, a river, an owl, a tree, and a fox get in his way. He swallows each one to get to the king. When the greedy king invites him to supper the chick must find a way to escape. He crows and sets off a series of implausible events that ultimately allow him to run away with the bag of gold. This delightful tale is well written and is complemented by vivid, humorous illustrations. The text and artwork well together to re-create the popular story. The repetitive structure of the text is appropriate for early readers and lends itself well to reading aloud. Joel Bangilan, Houston P.L.
