Southern Rites

Gillian Laub. Damiani (DAP, dist.), $50 (160p) ISBN 978-88-6208-413-0

A project years in the making, photojournalist Laub's book documents the reluctant desegregation of a Georgia high school's prom and the 2011 shooting of a young African-American man that reignited racial tensions. Through stirring testimonials, Laub introduces Anna and Julie, white sisters determined to challenge the status quo, and Angel, an African-American student worried she'll jeopardize her future by speaking her feelings on record. Another African-American student speaks of parental reactions to a white girl dating a black boy: "they'll be disowned or their car will be taken away." While covering the story, Laub recalls having her tires slashed, being threatened with arrest, and having her camera confiscated by the sheriff. Finally, Laub relates the murder of Justin Patterson by the white father of a friend he was visiting including an appalling transcript of the 911 call and an account of the events from Patterson's brother. The subjects of the photos include a young woman in a confederate flag top leaning against a vintage car, an stern-faced Southern belle staring at her reflection in a vanity mirror, and students in prom finery standing in desolate gravel parking lots and against faded barn wood backdrops. The images are utterly arresting and a tribute to Laub's discerning eye and mastery of composition. (June)
