Dusty Wants to Borrow Everything

Inger Sandberg. R & S Books, $6.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-91-29-58782-1

Dusty is a toddler of very few words. ``Borrow this?'' he asks, pointing at an object. The answer from his grandparents is usually ``yes,'' when the object of his desire is a hat or a pair of old spectacles. But it's a firm ``no'' when Dusty longs for a kitchen knife. By the end of the day, Grandpa and Grandma are worn out, but Dusty is still appropriating household items for his own use. The naive illustrations are spirited and adductive, admirably reflecting the world of a curious, creative two-year-old. As for the text, both Sandberg and her translator have an ear for the persistence of preschoolers and the play habits that make them happy. Ages 3-up. (June)
