Mexican journalist and fiction writer Pacheco (Los Trabajos Perdidos [Lost Efforts], Oceano, 1998) selected 48 of her interviews of some of Latin America's major authors, published from 1977 to 1994 in the pages of the Mexican magazine Siempre! Authors such as Angeles Mastretta, Isabel Allende, Sergio Pitol, Jaime Sabines, and Jos Donoso comment on politics, society, culture, literary currents and movements, and their colleagues, as well as their writing habits and inspirations. What results is a record of the lively contrasts between these Latin American novelists, playwrights, poets, and journalists. Pacheco's conversational interviewing style makes each interview a pleasure to read. This collection will be of interest for those already familiar with the authors' works, and it will inspire newcomers to add them to their reading lists.
