Las Mujeres y La Patria: Nuevas Historias de Amor de La Historia Argentina = The Women of the Homeland

Lucia Galvez. Grupo Editorial Norma, $25.8 (230pp) ISBN 978-987-545-005-9

Argentine historian Gulvez builds on her earlier Historias de amor de la historia Argentina (Love Stories from Argentine History, Grupo Editorial Norma, 1998) with these portraits of the wives, lovers, and companions of founding fathers, presidents, and other prominent men in Argentina's history. The author illustrates the discrimination that women have struggled to overcome in order to gain full participation in political life and equal rights with men. Though occasionally this admirable objective recedes from view among the many details of an individual story, the overall shape of the book shows how far Argentine women have come. Gulvez brings to life the stories of women from Mariquita S nchez (1786- 1868), the pro-independence Spanish noblewoman who first sang the national anthem, and Victoria Ocampo (1891-1979), the well-respected essayist on culture and great pal of Borges, to the very famous Eva Peron. This easy-to-read and entertaining book offers the flip side to Argentina's masculine history through the romances and everyday struggles of women. Readers with knowledge of Argentine history will also appreciate this book. Recommended for large bookstores and public and academic libraries, especially Latin American history and women's studies collections. Lisa M. Reynolds, Indianapolis-Marion Cty. P.L., IN
