Circles

Yusuke Yonezu. Minedition (IPG, dist.), $9.99 (26p) ISBN 978-988-8240-67-8

In a guessing-game-style board book built around colors and shapes, Yonezu asks readers to imagine what objects circles of various colors could form, with die-cuts helping to provide some answers. “What can a yellow circle make?” reads one page, beneath a die-cut circle; turning the page reveals a pair of yellow circles: one has become the sun, the other an egg. Outlined in chunky black lines, Yonezu’s images are instantly recognizable, with two blue circles becoming car wheels and eyeglasses and four black buttons turning into buttonholes and ladybug spots. The only puzzler is the die-cut circle on the cover, which results in an empty circle where a red balloon should be when the book is opened. All ages. (Apr.)
