Look Up with Me: Neil DeGrasse Tyson: A Life Among the Stars

Jennifer Berne, illus. by Lorraine Nam. HarperCollins/Tegen, $17.99 (40p) ISBN 978-0-06-284494-1

Berne’s story of noted astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson begins with his childhood, when his interest in the cosmos was first sparked. In Nam’s cut-paper and digital collage art, Tyson walks dogs to earn money for a new telescope, which he carries to the roof of his apartment building. Police officers called by a concerned neighbor realize that what was thought to be a weapon is just the boy’s telescope, and they admire Saturn alongside young Tyson. The subject’s passion and talents eventually lead him to become director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. Berne focuses not so much on Tyson’s superstar status but rather on his authentic and enduring sense of wonder: “one simple wish Neil has for the future is that all of us, every person on Earth, go outside at night and look up, look up, look up.” An introduction to an ambassador of the stars.
