Keto Diet: Your 30-Day Plan to Lose Weight, Balance Hormones, and Reverse Disease

Josh Axe. Little, Brown Spark, $28 (336p) ISBN 978-0-316-52958-7

Clinical nutritionist Axe (Eat Dirt) presents the low-carb keto diet as a clear-cut and effective path to weight loss in a user-friendly manual with more than 70 recipes. Keto, according to Axe’s summary, is a diet high in healthy fat, moderate in protein, and low in carbs that ushers the body into ketosis, a state in which fat is burned for fuel. Axe expresses a strong preference for organic foods, such as grass-fed beef, cage-free eggs, and avocados. In section one, he discusses starting the diet, with lists of what to eat regularly, occasionally, and not at all (in the last group, Axe includes sugar, grains, and processed foods). In section two, Axe proposes that the keto diet can help with treating some health problems, notably diabetes, citing articles from peer-reviewed journals, with separate chapters on metabolism, the brain, and hormones. Section three provides a “personalized” plan with 30 days of suggested meals, and section four contains uncomplicated keto recipes and a shopping guide. Axe advises following the diet for 30 to 60 days and later cycling in and out of it, predicting that once readers get their weight under control, they can enjoy the occasional “carb day.” Keto aficionados and newcomers both will find Axe’s guide optimistic and accessible.
