A Mrs. Miracle Christmas

Debbie Macomber. Ballantine, $20 (272p) ISBN 978-0-399-18139-9

This faith-filled holiday tale has little romance but plenty of Christmas spirit. After many failed attempts to get pregnant, Laurel McCullough has finally given up hope, although her husband, Zach, believes it will one day happen. Laurel’s grandmother, Helen, who lives with them, has worsening dementia. Fortunately, a caregiver, Mrs. Miracle, arrives with glowing recommendations. Although Helen is happier than ever with her new companion, Zach becomes suspicious and questions Mrs. Miracle’s identity. His doubt is no match for Mrs. Miracle and her band of angels. The struggle to become parents eventually wears on Zach and Laurel’s relationship, especially when Zach secretly continues to take steps to bring their dream to fruition. Faith and doubt are at war, but Mrs. Miracle is a formidable fighter with the ever-faithful Helen as a trusty sidekick. Snowflakes, merry music, and a traditional Christmas pageant round out the story. Although there’s no classic romantic plotline, the story is filled with love and dedication. Macomber makes witty references to the Bible without being pushy or preachy. Anyone who enjoys Christmas will appreciate this sparkling snow globe of a story.
