Demon Blood

Meljean Brook, Berkley Sensation, $7.99 (448p) ISBN 978-0-425-23547-8

Brook brings together two broken heroes in the high-stakes sixth Guardian paranormal romance (after 2009's Demon Forged). Manipulative but kindhearted Rosalia, an angellike Guardian, has a plan that could save the world's vampires from demons—or see them all destroyed. To succeed, she needs the help of vampire leader Deacon, who betrayed his friends in a failed attempt to save his community. Though her cause is good, Rosalia's efforts to manipulate Deacon uncomfortably mimic the actions of the demons who destroyed his life. Working together kindles a fiery attraction and steamy love scenes, but romance stalls as both think themselves unworthy of love. The characters are appealingly vulnerable, though the dialogue is occasionally awkward. The story also ties up overarching plot threads from previous entries, and while fans won't be disappointed, new readers may have trouble following the action. (July)
