Sleeping with the Enemy

Tracy Solheim. Berkley Sensation, $7.99 mass market (304p) ISBN 978-0-425-28102-4

Solheim’s fourth Out of Bounds sports contemporary (after Risky Game) pairs a business tycoon with a smart-talking lawyer, both intent on protecting their hearts. Jay McManus, owner of the Baltimore Blaze football team, has a problem: a former cheerleader ready to file a sexual harassment case. To make it go away, he turns to his ex-girlfriend, lawyer Bridgett Janik, who’s also the sister of Blaze tight end Brody. Both Jay and Bridgett are laboring under separate delusions at the cause of their contentious breakup 13 years before, but their spark never faded. Jay’s willing to share his body, but hand Bridgett his heart again? No way. Bridgett tries not to fall again for the man who has always pushed every single one of her buttons. Can the two navigate through the misunderstandings and be together again? Solheim offers a long and winding route to the inevitable conclusion. Readers will occasionally want to yell “Just communicate!” at Jay and Bridgett, but the two still make an appealing couple with plausible foibles. Agent: Melissa Jeglinski, Knight Agency. (Sept.)
