Hold Tight Bear

``Bear and Raggety, Little Doll and Donkey are going for a picnic,'' is the simple opening sentence of Maris's new picture book. When his three companions doze off, Bear wanders into the woods, with only a robin to caution him. But Bear, observed by small woodland creatures, seems headed for trouble; and when he falls down a deep hole, the robin speeds back through the woods to summon help. A rescue is effected with the aid of Little Doll's sash and Donkey's tail, and their efforts are successful. The rhythmic text is immediate and engaging, and Maris's pictures incorporate touches that will surprise and delight; wordless spreads give the book a quiet, assured pace throughout. Ages 3-6. (April)
