Clementine for Christmas

Daphne Benedis-Grab. Scholastic Press, $16.99 (256p) ISBN 978-0-545-83951-8

As she did in The Angel Tree (2014), author and PW reviewer Benedis-Grab uses the countdown to Christmas as a through line for a warm story that emphasizes friendship, compassion, and generosity—the hallmarks of the holiday. Since her father’s death, sixth-grader Josie has found solace in her dog, Clementine, and in her volunteer efforts at the hospital’s pediatric ward, performing skits and songs. Josie is gearing up for her favorite project—the hospital’s Christmas Festival—when she is paired up with two dissimilar classmates to save the show from being canceled. As the program comes together, the kids dispel misperceptions of each other, secrets are revealed, and new bonds are formed. The realistic family dynamics, focus on positive strength, and unwavering affection of a very special pup make this tale worthy of a curtain call. Ages 8–12. Agent: Sara Crowe, Harvey Klinger. (Aug.)
