Dealbreakers

Lauren Forsythe. Putnam, $18 trade paper (336p) ISBN 978-0-593-42253-3

A woman looking for the perfect man reevaluates her criteria in this cute contemporary from Forsythe (The Fixer Upper). London tech developer Marina Spicer created Dealbreakers, an app overlay that shows reviews of men on dating apps written by women they’ve gone out with in the past. She hopes it will be a time-saver in her own search for a man who doesn’t have tattoos or smoke and is ready for commitment. Enter Lucas Kennedy, her coworker at Let’s Go, a London start-up app aiming to connect users through exciting outings. The pair are tasked with testing out date ideas—including ax throwing, cocktail making, and an escape room—and as their competitive spirits run rampant, a mutual attraction develops. Unfortunately, Marina can’t get past the comments on Dealbreakers about Lucas’s reputation as a “Lothario.” Forsythe’s witty and deeply introspective story makes a case for taking a chance on messy, complicated love. Readers will be eager for Marina to open up to her perfectly imperfect soulmate. Agent: Hayley Steed, Madeleine Milburn Agency. (Aug.)
