The Re-Do List
Denise Williams. Berkley, $19 trade paper (432p) ISBN 978-0-593-64145-3
Williams (Just Our Luck) spins a charming story about new beginnings. After an embarrassing video of Willow Lewis getting dumped by her boyfriend of more than a decade goes viral, she needs to get away from it all and agrees to house-sit for her brother, Cruz, while he’s deployed overseas in the Air Force. This puts her in the orbit of her brother’s best friend, Deacon, who was medically discharged from the Air Force and is determined to reenlist. Deacon promises Cruz he’ll look out for Willow while she’s in town—then feels guilty when there’s an instant attraction between the two. When Willow learns that her ex has already moved on, she writes a list of memorable firsts she experienced with him that she’d now like to recreate without him, including going to a concert, camping, and having sex, and recruits Deacon to help her out. As Willow slowly checks off her bucket list, Deacon’s feelings grow stronger and he faces the dilemma of how to explain their relationship to Cruz. Williams injects plenty of humor and banter into the characters’ emotional growth as Willow discovers who she is outside of her relationship and Deacon learns that his life can have meaning outside of the military. This will speak to anyone looking for a love story centered on making the most of life changes and transitions. (Jan.)
