Stories of Deliverance: Speaking with Men and Women Who Rescured Jews from the Holocaust

Marek Halter. Open Court Publishing Company, $17.95 (256pp) ISBN 978-0-8126-9364-5

Halter (The Memory of Abraham) is a Holocaust survivor, born in Warsaw, who escaped with his family to France during the war. In this uplifting but unevenly translated memoir, he describes his search for those he calls the ""just,"" people who risked their lives to save Jews from the Germans. He talked with these heroic men and women in 14 countries, including Holland, Germany, Lithuania, Sweden and Turkey to understand the personal qualities that motivated them. Many of his subjects express humility regarding their actions and feel, as one noted, that ""there was no other possible choice."" Among those he interviewed are former West German Chancellor Willy Brandt and Pope John Paul II, as well as large numbers of Danes who resisted the Nazis. (Jan.)
