Night Reigns

Dianne Duvall. Kensington/Zebra, $6.99 mass market (320p) ISBN 978-1-4201-1862-9

Duvall’s follow-up to 2010’s Darkness Dawns crackles with energy, originality, and a memorable take-no-prisoners heroine. Marcus is an 800-year-old Immortal Guardian with a loner vibe. Ami is a weapons-savvy modern woman with dark secrets. Marcus doesn’t want a Second, and Ami isn’t sure she can care properly for the aloof Guardian, but when their friends slyly set them up, instant attraction flares between them along with a strong working relationship. As they navigate through intricate conspiracies and deadly enemies, their own fears and hidden pasts threaten to destroy their relationship even as it forms. While alpha male Marcus is a trifle flat, other story elements compel interest. Whizzing along at light speed while neatly incorporating components from the series start, this sophomore effort sizzles as Duvall hits a more confident writing stride. (Dec.)
