Marion Bataille. Chronicle, $14.95 (24p) ISBN 978-1-4521-2585-5

Compared to the drama of Bataille’s ABC3D, this numeric pop-up book is decidedly low-key (even despite its lurid mustard and black palette), but there’s an inherent elegance in its simplicity. About the size of a large index card, the book comes packaged in a slipcover case; Bataille uses just two shapes—a thick circle and chunky rectangle, which also stand in for zero and one—to create numbers that count up to 10. Turning the pages causes thin pop-up panels to slide from right to left, and the black shapes come together to form each number (a diagonally oriented rectangle lands on top of a circle to form the number six, for instance). A stylish and precisely designed package. Ages 3–up. (Oct.)
