Stand by Me

Pat Simmons. Sourcebooks Casablanca, $12.99 trade paper (256p) ISBN 978-1-4926-8770-2

Faith takes a hand in the burgeoning relationship between an academic and a young grandfather in this endearing inspirational romance from Simmons (Queen’s Surrender). Devout 36-year-old PhD candidate Kym Knicely dreams of starting a family, but her dating life has been more miss than hit. When she catches the interest of fellow practicing Christian Chaz Banks, a divorced, 42-year-old father to two adult sons, he seems to be heaven-sent. But she questions the blessing when she finds out he’s already a grandfather and has no interest in remarrying or having more kids, a deal breaker for Kym. Still, she finds his charming, chivalrous pursuit of her irresistible, and, despite their differing desires for the future, the two can’t stay away from each other, much to the delight of their matchmaking friends and family members. Simmons incorporates biblical scripture into the characters’ decision-making and shows the pair’s commitment to their faith without being preachy, hitting a sweet spot for inspirational romance. The love story is chaste, but there’s still plenty of passion and chemistry, and the supporting cast offers a sense of playful camaraderie. This is a strong pick for readers of Christian romance.
