Sing Some More!

Deborah Diesen, illus. by Howard Gray. Sleeping Bear, $16.99 (32p) ISBN 978-1-5341-1052-6

An exuberant quartet of birds serenade a community in Diesen’s rhyming picture book. Starting before dawn, the boisterous foursome is oblivious to the exasperation of an owl (who gives some serious side-eye), a sleepy human family, and other beings. The titular refrain splays across spreads in a colorful, curlicue-accented font, growing larger (and presumably louder) as the day, and the story, progresses. Gray’s effective use of chiaroscuro conveys the passage of time; a variety of perspectives and angles keeps the visuals fresh, despite the repeated text. Though some may find narrative tension lacking, a musically inclined presenter will undoubtedly bolster the readaloud—and the book can also work as a conversation starter about household noise ordinances and neighborly considerations. Back matter includes definitions of the musical terms used in the text. Ages 6–7. [em](Aug.) [/em]
