Devil in the Dark

Chris Lindberg. CreateSpace, $10.99 trade paper (290p) ISBN 978-1-539796-24-4
In Lindberg’s pulse-pounding sequel to 2011’s Code of Darkness, an outrage at a Texas border crossing prompts the authorities to turn to the operative known only as Rage, “a weapon of justice” with “unique abilities embedded within his DNA that enabled him to command speed, quickness, and strength like no other living being.” Rage must go after Javier Escondido Oropeza (aka the Jackal), the head of Mexico’s most powerful drug cartel, who’s believed responsible for the three car bombs and the barrage of rocket-propelled grenades that destroyed three U.S. Customs and Border Protection buildings at a checkpoint and killed more than 50 people. That the Jackal’s nephew Enrique Castillo happened to have been at the checkpoint at the time makes Enrique a suspect and forces him to seek his uncle’s help. Another survivor of the attack, Border Protection officer Otis Brown, a veteran of the Afghanistan War, is tempted to join a vigilante group in response. Jason Bourne fans will find a lot to like.
