THE TWELVE STORIES OF CHRISTMAS

, . . River Oak, $19.99 (256pp) ISBN 978-1-58919-991-0

Fans of Wheeler's many Christmas in My Heart volumes know that he is a self-described sentimentalist; the stories he typically chooses for his Christmas collections are maudlin almost to a fault (see below). This book is unique in that it is the only volume of Wheeler's own Christmas stories, most of which have been published before. He is a decent, though overly showy, writer whose talents for tugging at Ye Olde Heart Strings are consistent with the types of stories he favors in his mini-anthologies: families reconcile under the glow of the Christmas tree; long-lost lovers reunite. Each story is followed by an italicized afterword, describing the tale's origin and how it has been received by Wheeler's many readers. (Sept.)
