What Remains

Garrett Leigh. Riptide, $17.99 trade paper (278p) ISBN 978-1-62649-398-8

It’s love at first sight for London hipster and website designer Jodi Peters and sexy Irish firefighter Rupert O’Neil in Leigh’s latest escapist erotic romance. The pair have a passionate life together until Jodi has an accident and ends up in a coma. Flashbacks reveal the couple’s meeting. After Jodi is revived, his brain damage makes him unaware of who Rupert is and what he was to him. Jodi has lost the last five years of his memory as well as his entire bisexual identity. The outcome isn’t a surprise, but the amnesia conceit gives Leigh (Misfits) a fine opportunity to recreate the awkwardness and developing sexual attraction between the lovers as well as their private despair. It also means several opportunities for the guys to have (and relearn) hot sex. While there is plenty of eroticism, some risible writing and a late-act plot contrivance prompt eye rolls instead of dramatic tension. (July)
