Look Twice

Giuliano Ferri. MineditionUS, $12.99 (32p) ISBN 978-1-66265-099-4

Introducing each animalian sequence with a prompt to “look twice,” Ferri uses alternating die-cut spreads to hide and display the unexpected. To open, bumblebees fly toward a patch of pink flowers among which is an apparent ladybug (“Look twice/ at the beehouse...”); turn the page, and the ladybug becomes a pig’s snout and the flower petals its ears (“And you’ll find/ a pig running away!”). Other reveals play visually on words: a yellow-maned feline peeks out from dandelions, and a monkey scales not a tree but an elephantine trunk. Crayon-like outlines set against white backdrops characterize the flora and fauna that smilingly star in this bookish game of animalian peek-a-boo that ends with an image closer to home. Ages 2–4.
