Like a Rainbow: The Colorful Story of Cyndi Lauper

Amy Guglielmo and Jacqueline Tourville, illus. by Brigette Barrager. Atheneum, $19.99 (40p) ISBN 978-1-66596-200-1

The open-minded individualism of singer and songwriter Cyndi Lauper sparkles in Guglielmo and Tourville’s openhearted account of the musician’s road to stardom. “Cyndi wasn’t just different—she was unusual,” begins the laudatory text, which establishes the figure as “loud,” “creative,” and “fearless.” But though Lauper embraces opportunities for self-expression, she fails out of classes and leaves home at 17 after “things happened... that made her feel small and scared and silent.” Later, art school proves transformative, and a “hostel for runaways” offers additional grounding. Laden with red-hued, italicized lyrics, perky narration describes the subject’s struggles and triumphs en route to professional success: “Time after time, Cyndi tried on all kinds of jobs, but they never showed her true colors.” Combining textures and pointillist backgrounds, Barrager’s inky vignettes have a rainbow-toned pop art vibe that establishes Lauper’s fun-loving punk-like aesthetic. Background characters are portrayed with various skin tones. An author’s note concludes. Ages 4–8. (Apr.)
