The Future Saints
Ashley Winstead. Atria, $29 (352p) ISBN 978-1-6680-2466-9
Winstead (Fool Me Once) spins an emotionally charged rock ’n’ roll love story. Hannah Cortland, singer and lead guitarist of the Future Saints, isn’t sure how to go on after her younger sister, Ginny, the band’s manager, dies in a surfing accident. Ten months later, Theo Ford, an artist relations manager with Manifest Records, has the unenviable task of rescuing the band from its free fall into obscurity. The other members, drummer Kenny Lovins and bassist Tarak “Ripper” Ravishankar, are happy to go along with Theo’s ambitious plan to get them back on the road and record an album in between gigs. Only Hannah balks, unable to give up Ginny’s ghost. She does whatever she can to cause a scandal, whether performing drunk at a show in Las Vegas or shaving one side of her head before appearing on SNL. But her increasingly self-destructive behavior backfires: her antics make her a TikTok sensation and the band grows increasingly popular. Complicating matters, Theo confesses his romantic feelings for Hannah. Winstead raises the stakes when the band receives five Grammy nominations and an invitation to perform at the ceremony; readers will fly through the pages to find out whether Hannah will manage to tame her demons in time. Hannah and Theo are irresistible characters, making it easy to root for them to get together. Also touching is the relationship between Hannah and her late sister, which Winstead portrays through flashbacks. This one leaves a mark. Agent: Melissa Edwards, Stonesong. (Jan.)
