Weekendtivity: 25 Screen-free Activities to Make, Bake, Play, and Do

Whether kids are into cooking, crafting, or art making, they’ll find some unexpected ways to stay occupied in this book, which guides them through projects that include making rolled-up sandwich “snails,” transforming cupcake liners into colorful floral leis, making a picture frame from found twigs, and turning popsicle sticks into a makeshift harmonica. (“Keep everyone entertained this weekend with these fun and easy harmonicas,” writes Hayes, though entertainment mileage may vary, where parents are concerned.) The latter half of the book is devoted to punch-out cardboard pieces to be used to create origami-esque folded animals, sun catchers, and more. Digital illustrations offer a visual step-by-step representation for each project, and airy watercolor images, incorporated throughout, add whimsical notes that dovetail well with the book’s DIY, strictly analog ethos. Ages 7–10. (Apr.)
