The Unquotable Trump

R. Sikoryak. Drawn & Quarterly, $19.95 trade paper (48p) ISBN 978-1-77046-304-2

Comics mash-up master Sikoryak (Terms and Conditions) tackles “the Donald” by splicing president Trump’s image and quotes on to comic book covers ranging from the Golden Age to the present. The result is an often-hilarious collision between overblown comic book absurdity and Trump’s entitled absurdity. Naturals include Trump as Richie Rich and Uncle Scrooge, but slyer observations include the “I could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue” quote set on the cover of Batman’s first appearance. While the juxtaposition of comic book cover tropes and bombast is amusing to the layperson, readers well-versed in the history of American comics and many of its iconic covers will get added layers of humor seeing Trump rendered in styles emulating those of artists such as Jack Kirby, John Romita Sr., Carmine Infantino, Harry G. Peter, and Neal Adams. Printed in the retro treasury edition format, the book will someday serve as a memento of a time when truth was stranger than fiction. (Nov.)
