Natural Solutions to Menopause: How to Stay Healthy Before, During and Beyond the Menopause

Marilyn Glenville. Pan Macmillan, $19.95 trade paper (308p) ISBN 978-1-905744-68-8

Fraught with drastic changes to body and mind, the road to menopause can wreak havoc on daily life, and unless the transition is treated proactively, it can negatively affect long-term health. With that in mind, nutritionist and psychologist Glenville (Natural Solutions to PCOS), an authority on women’s health issues and nutritional medicine, presents this pragmatic guide. Beginning with a discussion of how to help your body prepare for menopause through diet and other lifestyle changes, Glenville examines the hormonal fluctuations associated with the approach of menopause (i.e., perimenopause), offers a 12-step hormone-balancing defensive diet, and pinpoints top anti-aging supplements and foods. Part Two includes discussion of factors that can push you into premature menopause—such as smoking and traumatic life events—the pros and cons of hormone replacement therapy and bioidentical hormones, and tests for medical conditions to which menopause can make you more vulnerable. Glenville concludes with a section on what to expect from and how to triumphantly navigate a post-menopausal life. Although Glenville’s frequent references to her own clinics and preferred retail supplement site is off-putting, it in no way minimizes the wealth of experience and understanding she brings to a subject in which every woman should make herself an expert.
