Whoosh! A Watery World of Wonderful Creatures

Marilyn Baillie, illus. by Susan Mitchell. Owlkids (PGW, dist.), $16.95 (32p) ISBN 978-1-926973-98-2

Children imitate animals that live in or around water in this cheerful introduction to 11 common and less familiar creatures. In one scene, a girl happily relaxes on a green pool float, imitating the stance of a water strider that introduces itself on the opposing page: “I can race across lakes and ponds—my light body and long legs help me walk on water.” Elsewhere, an adult assists another child as she learns to swim, mimicking a river otter and its mother, while a tot bundled in a towel is as cozy as a hermit crab in its shell. Mitchell’s bright paintings offer fun visual parallels between animal and child, and a closing “Did You Know? section provides additional animal facts. Ages 3–7. (Apr.)
