Prolific author Rand (Pax Dakota
) fails to merge magical realism with conventional mystery in this disjointed novel. Speech-impaired man-child millionaire Mark Trane has dubbed his new Las Vegas hotel “Hell,” and after the building nearly collapses and a homeless man is found dead in the walk-in freezer, the name seems prescient. The plot is overshadowed by a wealth of quirky characters, but they're not nearly interesting enough to keep things moving, and when the chaotic climax hits, there's no reason to be invested in their fate. Rand's writing has potential, but this muddled story never finds its stride. (Feb.)
