Safe: The Responsible American's Guide to Home and Family Security

Wayne LaPierre. WND Books (Midpoint, dist.), $27.95 hardcover (336p) ISBN 9781935071891

In his introduction, LaPierre, executive vice president for the NRA and author of numerous titles about firearms and freedom, makes no secret of his agenda to protect the rights of Americans to bear arms, and goes on to offer advice on the subject of personal safety in our homes, the outdoors, the digital world, and on the streets. As most of us are not experts on how to cope with child abductions, long-term power outages, or other dramatic circumstances, it's hard to argue against an increased awareness of personal safety. Readers will likely also benefit from LaPierre's insight into accident prevention, online safety, avoidance of identity theft, and a helpful reference section that features a number of informative websites. NRA supporters may find LaPierre's volume a welcome addition to their library, gun control advocates will see it as an attempt to spin a polarizing issue. Pried free from a political grip, however, LaPierre's intense focus on common-sense security is a useful addition to anyone's Go Bag. (Sept. 2010)
