Killing Kryptonite: Destroy What Steals Your Strength

John Bevere. Messenger International, $19.99 trade paper (312p) ISBN 978-1-937558-11-6

Bevere (The Bait of Satan), Christian minister and cofounder of the missionary organization Messenger International, fills this insightful book with the allurements and powerful effects of sin. Likening sin to kryptonite (the otherworldly substance that could hurt Superman), Bevere surveys the current religious scene and worries that churches and their leaders are not sufficiently equipping members to confront the dangers of modernity and the ever-increasing enticements of the world. Among those dangers, he cites wealth and greed, divorce, corruption, inaction, idolatry, and intolerance. Chapters are short and meant to be read in one sitting. Each is followed by a “Take Action” section for integrating Bevere’s principles into everyday life; these include suggested prayers and prompts for contemplation on life. God is “looking for those who will stand and speak against the sins that are working to fill our churches today,” Bevere writes. He is uncompromising in his strong, orthodox opposition to he perceives as the erosion of Christian standards in the modern church. He clearly wants to be among those answering the call against sin as he implores others in the Christian community to join him. If creeping compromise is indeed the kryptonite of the modern church, then Bevere stands on solid ground in his passion for holiness and purity. This accessible book will invigorate Christians. (Oct.)
