Wonders of the World: An Interactive Tour of Marvels and Monuments

Isabel Otter, illus. by Margaux Carpentier. 360 Degrees, $22.99 (18p) ISBN 978-1-944530-18-1

This colorful tour of the world wonders includes the seven ancient wonders, seven additional modern wonders (a new list was compiled in the year 2000), and seven naturally occurring wonders. Carpenter offers sharply stylized renderings of each subject, including Machu Picchu, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Chichen Itza, and the Colosseum, while integrated flaps, mini books, and other interactive elements provide historical context. In a spread devoted to Phidias’s famed statue of Zeus, readers will learn about the Olympic Games; elsewhere, a flap reveals the interior structure of the Great Pyramid of Giza; and a mini-book briefly details the “Phases of Destruction” of the Temple of Artemis. A final spread offers a condensed presentation of natural wonders (though readers won’t gain a true sense of scale from the captioned images), along with an eye-catching pop-up of Parícutin. Ages 6–8. (Sept.)
