50 Knitted Wraps and Shawls

Marisa Nöldeke, trans. from the German by Katharina Sokiran. Stackpole, $29.95 (176p) ISBN 978-0-8117-3861-3

This lovely collection from knitting blogger Nöldeke provides avid crafters with an array of appealing patterns. In the preface, Nöldeke explains that she loves shawls because they always fit and can be created in a variety of shapes, colors, and fibers. Each of the 50 patterns included are accompanied by clearly written construction tips and color photos of the finished product. Though Nöldeke identifies some patterns as basic, this should not be confused with beginner level. Most patterns include chart reading and complex stitch combinations best suited to expert or extremely confident intermediate-level knitters. For those wanting to try their hand at a lacework shawl, the design for “Vienne” also includes charted instructions, which many knitters find easier to follow when working lace or other intricate patterns. Confident knitters who’d like to experiment with colorwork have many choices, including the linen “Brianna” design, which combines several colors, stripes, and patterns. This will be an excellent addition to the knitting library for crafters who enjoy experimenting with design choices to fashion stylish, one-size-fits-all creations. (Apr.)
