Bestseller Burton (You’re Not Safe) ties the past to the present in her latest romantic thriller set in Nashville. Thirty years after the murder of Annie Rivers Dawson, lawyer Rachel Wainwright is trying to get Annie’s convicted killer a DNA test. Det. Deke Morgan’s deceased father was the policeman who arrested the man, and Deke sends through the request, assuming it will prove guilt rather than innocence. Then a woman who looks like Annie is killed in the same fashion, and more deaths follow. Burton’s trademark is providing the serial killer’s viewpoint without giving anything away, and by feeding the reader tiny details one at a time, she keeps the tension building. The attraction between Rachel and Deke develops slowly, with respect paving the way for a lasting relationship, and the reader roots for both. A few too many coincidences make this story less convincing than some of Burton’s other novels. (Nov.)
