The Corner of Holly and Ivy

Debbie Mason. Forever, $7.99 mass market (400p) ISBN 978-1-5387-4424-6

Those new to Harmony Harbor, a small town not too far from Boston, may struggle to catch up with all the goings-on that influence Mason’s latest contemporary set there. Arianna Bell’s bridal shop and other local businesses burned down in a devastating fire. Back in town after being unfairly fired from his prestigious law firm, Connor Gallagher is determined to get Arianna out of her grandmother’s home, where she’s been hiding, depressed and weakened by her injuries. When Arianna is pushed into becoming a candidate for mayor, working with Connor on the campaign helps her find new purpose as the election and holiday season approach. Then Connor’s family manipulates him into running against Arianna. It’s a deservedly uphill battle to win her love and trust back, but anything is possible at Christmas. Series fans and new readers who can overlook a great many related characters, the ghost of a great-grandmother who tries to control her offspring, and a side plot about dirty politics will hope for these long-separated first loves to reunite. Others will want to give this one a pass. Agent: Pamela Harty, Knight Agency. (Oct.)
