Harry Potter Knitting Magic: More Patterns from Hogwarts and Beyond

Tanis Gray. Insight Editions, $29.99 (224p) ISBN 978-1-64722-169-0

“We knitters take simple sticks and string and turn them into beautiful handmade things. By doing this, we create magic of our very own,” writes designer Gray (Star Wars: Knitting the Galaxy) in this delightful collection of Wizarding World projects. Patterns are designated beginner, intermediate, or advanced with one, two, or three lighting strikes, a cute nod to Harry Potter’s characteristic scar. Most of the patterns come in the “Wizarding Wardrobe” and “Inspired Apparel” chapters: fans will learn how to make a “Hogwarts Quidditch Pullover,” perfect for beginners; an intermediate-level “Hogwarts Express Cowl”; and a delicately draped “Gigglewater Shawl,” an advanced project. There’s also “Spellbinding Stuffies” and “Crafty Keepsake” chapters, with such projects as “Harry & Friends Dolls,” and a “Christmas at Hogwarts Tree Skirt.” The photographs of each project are spectacular, and patterns are accompanied by a sidebar with instructions on the particular stitches required as well as any special construction notes—whether the pattern is knit from the top down or with live stitches kept on one’s needles, for example. Fans are sure to appreciate such special touches as quotations from the franchise’s film set designers and screenwriters, as well as photo stills from the films. Potterheads will delight in this whimsical guide. (Sept.)
