Mental Fitness: Maximizing Mood, Motivation, and Mental Wellness by Optimizing the Brain-Body-Biome

Shawn M. Talbott. Turner, $18.99 trade paper (288p) ISBN 978-1-684-42676-8

Nutritional biochemist Talbott (The Secret of Vigor) aims to put an end to mental unwellness in this straightforward look at what makes people sick and what they can do to get better. Talbott posits that the “gut-heart-brain axis” is the key to understanding how to maintain good health and avoid succumbing to the overwhelming stress people face on a daily basis. He describes the interactions between one’s gut, heart, and brain as involving three systems that work together with the aim of achieving “mental fitness”: the microbiome in the gut and the electrical signals coming from the heart are read by the brain, and the totality constitutes one’s mental wellness. Talbott suggests that those signals can be optimized by eating more fruits, vegetables, and spices; practicing mindfulness; exercising; getting better sleep; and taking certain supplements. The supplements are especially emphasized, and Talbott offers an extensive list of prebiotics, probiotics, and vitamins that might leave readers overwhelmed. Indeed, those new to holistic practices may not find his promises of vitality, longer life, and great mental health to be convincing. (There is a dearth of supportive data.) But readers already on board will find this to be an encouraging guide. (Sept.)
