Sew It Yourself with DIY Daisy: 20 Pattern-Free Projects (and Infinite Variations) to Make Your Dream Wardrobe

Daisy Braid. Hardie Grant, $24.99 trade paper (208p) ISBN 978-1-74379-820-1

DIY Daisy blogger Braid debuts with an uplifting spin on standard sewing fare that focuses on making customized clothing and accessories out of simple shapes with “no buttons, zips or darts.” She starts with an overview of basic skills, such as how to calculate the amount of fabric required for a pattern, apply bias binding, take one’s own measurements, and finish a seam. Projects are broken into two sections, accessories and clothing, with the former featuring such beginner-friendly ideas as a simple tie scrunchie, a straightforward tote bag, and some fabric-covered button earrings. The clothing designs are relaxed and ruffled, and include a baggy kama square-neck top, the breezy Sophie trapezoid skirt, and the “floaty” Maya dress. Throughout, Braid shares variations, such as the “patch pocket shorts” version of the “trace pants,” and a skirt pattern that can have a second ruffle. The bold, quirky graphics are nice, but newbies may wish for some step-by-step photos to help them along. Even so, this creative guide is full of inspiration. (Aug.)
