The Unbearable Lightness of Dragons

Katie MacAlister. Signet, $7.99 mass market (352p) ISBN 978-0-451-23344-8

Successful authors may never run out of ideas if they can resurrect dead villains and begin anew. Luckily, MacAlister's latest offering, the second in her Light Dragon series, rewards readers with the banter and mishaps common when heroines, like Ysolde de Bouchier, must deal with stubborn dragons like her husband, Baltic.%C2%A0Reunited despite their deaths, Ysolde turns her attention to determining why the First Dragon brought her back to life, as well as the task she must uncover and complete to bring peace to the different dragon sects.%C2%A0For irregular series readers, the motivation to fulfill the quest set forth by the First Dragon may seem murky, particularly the scenes meant to be part illusion.%C2%A0However, this can be overlooked in favor of enjoying Ysolde's awkward attempts to control her wonky magic, which make for laugh-out-loud moments.%C2%A0As always, Jim, the demon, and MacAlister's familiar dragons from previous outings are a welcome addition to the farce.
