Pip and Posy: The Little Puddle

Axel Scheffler. Candlewick/Nosy Crow, $12.99 (32p) ISBN 978-0-7636-5878-6

In a padded book that addresses an embarrassing but common childhood occurrence, two friends—Pip, a bunny, and Posy, a mouse—have a play date on a rainy day. They build a train track and town, grab a snack (“Pip was very thirsty”), and pretend to be lions. Pip is having so much fun that he forgets to go to the bathroom. “Suddenly, there was a little puddle on the floor,” reads the text as Pip and Posey both gaze in horror. But as a self-conscious Pip shimmies out of his wet pants, Posy wipes up the puddle, immediately reassuring him that “Everyone has accidents sometimes.” While the book doesn’t ignore the anxiety inherent in a bathroom accident, Posy’s “these things happen” response should be heartening for readers who’ve found themselves in a similar situation. Available simultaneously: Pip and Posy: The Super Scooter. Ages 2–5. (Dec.)
