Who’s There?

Alain Crozon. Chronicle, $10.99 (10p) ISBN 978-1-4521-4014-8

Bold cartooning, a vibrant primary color scheme, and clever use of flaps create a fun guessing game for children and the adults reading to them. “Crick! Crack! Who is hatching out of that blue egg?” reads the first of nine questions; lifting two pieces of eggshell reveals a turtle whose arms also lift out, as if to play peekaboo with readers. Other nifty moments include a banana that peels fairly realistically, a hat that does double duty as a sombrero and a sailor hat for two animals, and nesting dolls stacked four flaps deep. The lack of explicit, written answers to the questions keeps the reading experience open-ended and interactive. Simultaneously available: All Shook Up! Ages 2–4. (Aug.)
