Iris and Roy Johansen. Grand Central, $30 (336p) ISBN 978-1-5387-7137-2
The mother and son team of Iris and Roy Johansen paint by numbers in their 12th thriller featuring FBI consultant Kendra Michaels (after Flashback). At the outset, Kendra, who was born blind but “gained her vision via a revolutionary surgical procedure,” is leading a sedate life as a music therapist in Southern California. Her placid routine is disrupted when her friend Olivia receives a cryptic email from Justice Department intelligence operative Adam Lynch, Kendra’s occasional love interest: “Hope all is well at the farm. Be sure to check out the livestock inoculations.” Olivia tells Kendra about the email, who then attempts to reach Adam without success. When Kendra heads to Adam’s house, she finds a small package containing an old postcard and the name of a British bookstore. Kendra heads to the bookstore, where she encounters the aftermath of a grisly murder. Meanwhile, supplementary chapters detail how Adam’s life is threatened by forces hoping to unleash a major technological weapon on the world. Though fast-paced, Kendra’s pursuit of Adam and the looming threat of mass destruction lacks surprises. This is strictly for series completists. Agent: Andrea Cirillo, Jane Rotrosen Agency. (June)
