Meant to Be

Jennifer Probst. Montlake, $12.95 trade paper (350p) ISBN 978-1-5420-3480-7

Though the first Twist of Fate romance from Probst (the Sunshine Sisters series) may lose some readers at its start with an interlude involving questionable consent, it ultimately builds a solid community of singles in Nyack, N.Y., who fans will be eager to track through future installments. When Chiara Kennedy meets Sebastien Ryder, their connection is instant. But Sebastien longs for stability while Chiara craves adventure, and they choose not to act on their chemistry. When Chiara’s best friend, Rory, starts dating and eventually marries Sebastien, all Chiara can do is keep her distance. Years later, Chiara and her circle reel from Rory’s death in a freak accident—leading Chiara and Sebastien, who’s unwittingly been roofied by a drink intended for Chiara, into a drunken hookup. Chiara’s guilt is compounded by her fears that she’s taking over what would have been Rory’s life as she assumes Rory’s role as editor-in-chief at women’s interest website Quench. Still, she and Sebastien can’t help but grow closer. Sebastien and Chiara spend a bit too long angsting over their relationship, especially considering the obstacles they face to build a life are relatively low. Thankfully, Chiara’s cute dog and lively friends add some spark. It’s far from perfect, but there’s plenty here to enjoy. Agent: Kevan Lyan, Marsal Lyon Literary. (Apr.)
